We’re Here for You and Your Bird…

At SAAS we understand that life can be unpredictable. We also know that no one imagines that they will one day face challenges that interfere with their ability to care for their beloved pet. We’re in this together.

Important Reminders About Surrender:

  • Surrendering your pet DOES NOT make you a bad pet owner. In fact, in many circumstances it makes you a GREAT pet owner for identifying your barrier’s and choosing a life that’s best for the animal.

  • On average, a bird will live in seven different homes throughout it’s lifetime. Surrendering to a legitimate rescue instead of rehoming to another person can help break this cycle as the rescue works hard to find a fitting home for each bird.

  • There are many reasons someone may no longer be able to care for their pet. If you are not completely sure you want to surrender your bird, please reach out to us so we can try and help you address these issues.

  • We like to keep in touch with everyone who surrenders their bird to us. We will send you updates and photos usually via text or email as long as we have the bird. You can opt out of this if you choose to.

SAAS Policies Regarding Surrender

  • We do a courtesy hold on all new intakes for 7 days. If you choose to have your bird back within these 7 days, we will coordinate with you.

  • We take all new intakes to an Avian vet after the first 7 days they are with us, UNLESS we feel there is an emergency such as illness that requires a sooner veterinary visit. If you decide after your bird has been evaluated by a vet that you want them back, you will be required to pay the veterinary expenses. Please note that you will be notified when we have scheduled a veterinary visit for your bird and if the appointment needs to be sooner than 7 days.

  • Birds in our rescue are not eligible for adoption for the first 30 days they are with us. However, if you choose to get your bird back we will coordinate that with you. You will still be required to pay veterinary fees if it has been over 7 days since surrendering and your bird has already seen a vet.

  • If you choose to re-adopt your bird after 30 days have passed, you will be required to submit an application and pay the applicable adoption fee for the bird.
